President Obama renews commitment to fix our broken immigration system

Los Angeles – According to an article in the New York Times President Barack Obama has renewed his commitment to push immigration reform legislation, including legalization of undocumented workers. The following is a statement from Angelica Salas, Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrants Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), a regional community-based organization based in Los Angeles.

“We commend President Barack Obama for standing firm on his commitment to the American people moving forward on immigration reform during his first term in office. His leadership, vision and courage have energized our community as we look to him for practical, just and humane solutions to our country’s broken immigration system.

The White House’s announcement demonstrates that this President will stand for justice not politics as usual. He is committed to work hand in hand with Congress and the community on solutions that strengthen our nation. He knows the time is now, that reform is the solution, and that it is the right thing to do.

Immigration reform now makes sense because it will bring millions out of the shadows, will punish exploitative employers, and will establish a level playing field in the labor market. At least seven million people in the U.S. labor force is currently outside the system, is not covered by labor laws, OSHA and minimum wage. Immigrant integration lifts wages for all workers, restores tax fairness, and eliminates the unfairness of employers who mock the law.

Latino and immigrant voters came out in historical proportions in November 2008 to give this President a clear mandate that in order to make immigration laws enforceable we have to change the law. We applaud the President’s conviction to work on an agenda that solves problems and we stand by him ready to work hard to make sure he receives the support needed to pass a just and humane immigration reform bill this year.

El Presidente Obama renueva su compromiso de reparar el quebrantado sistema de inmigración

Los Angeles – A raíz de un artículo publicado en el New York Times hoy día, el pueblo estadounidense se enteró de que el Presidente Obama ha reiterado su compromiso de avanzar legislación que reforme las leyes migratorias, incluyendo una legalización para los 12 millones de trabajadores indocumentados que viven en el país. A continuación la declaración de Angélica Salas, Directora Ejecutiva de la Coalición Pro Derechos Humanos del Inmigrante en Los Angeles (CHIRLA), una organización regional pro derechos de inmigrantes basada en Los Angeles.

“Aplaudimos al Presidente Barack Obama por sostener su compromiso con el público estadounidense de avanzar una reforma migratoria durante su primer término. Su liderazgo, visión, y valor nos han energizado a quienes buscamos por soluciones prácticas, justas, y humanas al quebrantado sistema de inmigración.

El anuncio de la Casa Blanca demuestra que este Presidente representa justicia no política como siempre. El Presidente está comprometido a trabajar mano a mano con el Congreso y la comunidad en soluciones que fortalezcan a nuestra nación y nuestra comunidad. El sabe que el momento es ahora, que una reforma es la solución, y que hacerlo es lo correcto

Una reforma a las leyes migratorias en este momento tiene sentido porque sacará a millones de personas de las sombras, castigará a los empleadores explotadores, y establecerá un campo ecuánime en el mercado de labores. Por lo menos siete millones de trabajadores en este momento laboran fuera de un sistema de protección, sin OSHA o salario mínimo. La integración de los inmigrantes indocumentados daría un relieve a los salarios mínimos, restauraría igualdad en los impuestos, y eliminaría las prácticas oscuras de ciertos empleadores.

Los votantes latino e inmigrantes salieron a votar en proporciones históricas este pasado mes de noviembre para darle al presidente una responsabilidad muy clara de cambiar la ley de inmigración para que ésta pudiera ser aplicable. Aplaudimos la convicción del Presidente en elaborar una agenda de trabajo que se enfoca en resolver problemas y le expresamos nuestro apoyo y compromiso de trabajar duramente para que su propuesta conlleve a una reforma migratoria justa y humana durante este año.
