RENEW AND SECURE IT - DACA RENEWAL CLINIC
The campaign is titled "Renew and Secure It," and entails free legal consultations, free DACA renewal processing services, and for those who qualify, CHIRLA will offset the $495 fees required by USCIS. The campaign runs through July 21, 2018.
DACA recipients whose work permit expires within the next yer, or has already expired, are invited to stop by CHIRLA on a Triage Day which run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. No appointment is necessary, but applicants must be in line by 8 a.m. to be considered for the same Triage Day.
In 2015, at the height of the program, 363,553 immigrant youth renewed their DACA permits. These would have been eligible for renewal in 2017-2018. Only 93,857 have renewed between October 2017 through March 2018, according to USCIS Figures (March 31, 2018). Nearly 815,000 young immigrants nationally have benefited from DACA since 2012. Half a million DACA recipients are in California.
"We are very concerned DACA recipients nationally are not renewing their permits in the high numbers we were expecting. It may be due to fear to the anti-immigrant rhetoric led by President Trump, not having sufficient funds to pay the $495 USCIS fees, confusion due to all the court rulings and legal threats, or because they may incorrectly assume a permanent solution such as the DREAM Act may be in the works," stated Luis Perez, CHIRLA Legal Services Director.
"Whatever the reason," added Mr. Perez, "we want DACA recipients to know during the next 2 and a half months they have an opportunity here at CHIRLA to apply and secure two more years of protection."
For more information, applicants may call CHIRLA's hot line (888) 624-4752.
