After witnessing the massive march in Los Angeles on May 1, 2006, Whelma was inspired to join CHIRLA. She was an intern first and became the Administrator and Intern/Volunteer Coordinator in 2007. She received a BA in Poli Sci and Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida and an MBA in Nonprofit Management from American Jewish University in 2011.
